Well, today, I finally had some luck fishing for Trout! On the first day out, I caught one Trout that was worth keeping and then a little guy. The second day, we caught none, the third day, we caught none...but today was a good day!
We have been camping at Volga River State Recreation Area, which is just south of West Union, IA and close to Echo Valley State Park. Echo Valley has a couple of streams that run into each other which have Trout. Otter Creek and Glover Creek. I have never had much luck here...ever. We usually head up to Yellow River Forest or Bloody Run Creek to do our Trout fishing, but this campground had spots for the Independence Day Holiday Weekend, so we are here.
Do you ever go fishing and just have no luck? That has been us this past week. Fortunately, there has been plenty of beer and wine on this trip! If you aren't catching fish while camping, you may as well be drinking!
Well, today, we stopped at a couple of hardware stores in South Union and picked up hooks, bait, and some other items. I found some Trout Power Bait, small treble hooks and picked up some little lures to add to the collection.
Man...I tried everything when we got to the creek! Lures, worms, Powerbait, spinners...and those damned Trout just sat in the creek and laughed. Those damned Trout...little did they know, today was MY day! They would meet a real fisherman...and then they would also see me! But, luck was on my side!
As Tambins and I walked towards the north end of the stream, we crossed the first little stream crossing and tried out the bait at the first big pool...well, the Trout could be seen in the water, bit they didn't want to be food today. We spent a little time here before deciding to head upstream further. As we were just getting ready to cross the next crossing in the creek, I told Tambins to stop! You could see a ton of trout hanging out in the pool in the crossing! We decided to try out luck here.
I started out using Panfish Tubes, the trout were chasing it big time! I was just unsuccessful at hooking the fish! I decided to swap out to a spinning lure which I would cast upstream and then reel in with the current...bam! Caught one right away! Finally!!!! I was trying not to get too excited, but I could literally see 20ish Trout just hanging out...waiting for food to come downstream to them!
I had tried spinners every single day so far at this creek and had not even gotten a bite. I suppose the conditions were just right today? I then was successful casting across the pool and reeling in with another catch! Today was going to be a good day after all! Tambins and I ended up catching a total of 6 Trout between us and my mother caught one! We will be eating Trout for dinner!!! Yay!!
So, on our last day of camping here, we were able to catch some dang Trout and make the Trout fee worth it! 😂
It was hot today! 🥵 I am glad that I had my fishing hat with me! Poor Tambins got a really bad sunburn today. 😥
I would definitely recommend the GearTopDesigns hat that you see me wearing in my pics. It is comfortable and the sides can be snapped up or let down to protect against the sun. I usually burn on the back of my neck really bad, but this hat has helped with that a lot! You can see the style that I wear here: https://amzn.to/3wmooio
