Was it a bear or a raccoon?

A while back, I was driving home in my 2014 Ford Focus Titanium hatchback. It was dark and I had seen a lot of "roadkill" along the road so was being especially careful to watch for deer and other large creatures that could potentially find their way in my path. I live about 30 minutes drive from work on the Interstate, so traveling at 70-75ish MPH makes any kind of animal encounter pretty catastrophic...as you can imagine, unless of course, you have been involved in an accident on the interstate with an animal before. In that case...you know exactly what I mean! Well, I was on my way home, as I mentioned, late at night and I was about to the exit that I take to drive the final 5 or so minutes home, when in the lane that I am not driving in, I see a big ass raccoon! He is headed to the center ditch so I think to myself "At least he is walking away from where I am driving" and at almost that exact moment, the bastard turns around and bolts directly in front of me! I slammed on my brakes and tried to swerve, but at this point, it was far too late! I heard a loud bang and the car seemed to lurch forward and into the air as I made an impact with the poor raccoon. This was a very large raccoon, and I knew that it was going to hurt the car based on the size of this thing! I was definitely sad about hitting the raccoon, it always makes me sad when I see an animal that has been hit as I have quite a bit of empathy towards animals for whatever reason. The car immediately started making a terrible sound, like something was rubbing against the wheel or a moving part was grinding against plastic. I stopped and checked but everything seemed to be in ok shape to drive, so I went ahead and drove home the last few minutes. I reached out to my insurance company and filed a claim immediately, and the next morning when it was light out, I decided to go check out the damage. I was shocked! The entire front of the car was obliterated (as I expected), but the driver's side door was also smashed as well as the front fender! I had known that the raccoon was large, but this thing demolished the entire front and side of my Focus! Wowzers! It was at this moment that I wondered if bears traveled across northern Iowa because surely, it was not a raccoon that had caused this amount of damage! Well, long story short ( I guess?) the car ended up being totaled (after a disaster of an experience with my Insurance company) and I ended up replacing the Focus Titanium with a beautiful, Black Focus ST!
