This is the first book by Andy Weir that I have ever read. I have seen The Martian (the movie) and I enjoyed the film, a lot! I was looking for a good science fiction story to read and this one had great reviews, so I decided to go ahead and start here.
I have to start out by saying that I absolutely love the comedy thrown in throughout this story! I actually laughed out loud multiple times!
I also have to admit...there was a lot of scientific terminology, math, etc that was not too terribly distracting, but some authors seem to rely on this a bit heavily and I felt this was approaching that level early on. Fortunately, the rest of the story more than made up for this!
If you have read Andy Weir, maybe this is his normal thing, but if you haven't, just be prepared for it in this book.
I never felt like this story was rushed or that it was dragging along either. The pace of the story seemed perfect and I really enjoyed the way that we were given glimpses of the past as amnesia was a key element for this book, and it worked out very well!
If you like books such as the "RAMA" series by Arthur C. Clarke, then I believe that you will enjoy this book. This is a different type of story than the movie that I watched (The Martian) but I have not read that book so cannot give a direct comparison to Andy Weir's written story, but if that one is anything like this, I will definitely be reading that book as well!
I really hate spoilers in reviews so do not want to get into the details, but our main character awakens on a spaceship with no idea of who he is, why he is on the space ship, or why his two companions are dead. We slowly get glimpses of what is going on through flashbacks as Ryland Grace slowly recalls the details of who he is and why the project that he is a part of matters so much for the entire human race!
This should definitely be read by anyone who is a fan of science fiction!
