Not all of Iowa is flat!

My wife and I recently took a road trip through part of Iowa and Wisconsin to check out the Autumn colors. We hit up the "Driftless" area of the state, which is something that many people do not know about! The area is referred to as "Driftless" as it was not covered by glaciers and therefore does not have the boulders, rocks, and such (or Drift) that much of the Midwest has across the landscape due to being covered by multiple glaciers the last few hundred thousand years. This has also left this part of the state in much different shape than the rest of the Midwest and Iowa!

The Mississippi River flows along this area and offers some amazing views! Pikes Peak State Park (not to be confused with the Park in Colorado!) offers some amazing views from lookout points and has a nice walking trail with Ancient Burial Grounds and a little waterfall. The trail from the Lookout will take you to Bridal Veil Falls and is definitely worth the short hike!

After walking the trails, there is a cute little village along the river called McGregor that will transport you back in time! This little town looks amazing with the bluffs surrounding the downtown area that looks like it has not changed since the days of dirt roads and horses used as the main form of transportation!

Right on the river, there is a little (actually, quite large) restaurant that serves bratwurst, hot dogs, hamburgers, and the like! Be sure to sit out on the dock and watch the boats and barges going up and down the river!

If you ever find yourself in this part of the country, be sure to stop by this amazing area of the state of Iowa! Youtube video tour of the area: https://youtu.be/WNptQfBIKP8
